If you are still using USAF AFMIT terminals, you have seriously stretched the original 1993 meaning of 'I' in AFMIT, and should consider upgrading to the WIN32 version.
METHOD A: Upgrade the AFMIT hardware
Memory: Upgrade the AFMIT 486 memory to at least 16MB, though 32-64MB would be best. (The software has run under WIN95 on as little as a 25MHz 386 with 10MB memory, but slowly, with alot of disk swapping.) You know the drill; open up the box, plug in some cheap SIMMs.
Hard drive:(optional) While you have the box open, replace the IDE drive with a newer one with more capacity.
SCSI interface/external CD-ROM:(optional) You really want to install WIN98 any other way? This can be temporary. We regularly install a SCSI interface and external CD-ROM temporarily to install sofware on systems that don't have them. Or, as long as you have the free slot, keep the controller in there. (Windows will require access to the CD-ROM whenever it is reinstalled or updated, so this is a good idea.)
Our Canadian Dealer has done this upgrade on the same hardware for some CND customer's who purchased AFMIT terminals.
METHOD B: Gut the AFMIT hardware, install in a new Pentium box.
Go out and buy a new box with available EISA/ISA slots for the RX/demodulator cards in your AFMIT. Open up the AFMIT terminal, remove the RX/demodulator cards, and install them in the new box, which will already be configured with WIN98, CD-ROM, massive memory, hard disk, etc. Then, install WeatherTrac-WIN32 software(which you can download from this website for evaluation.)
METHOD C: Replace the AFMIT hardware, run WORLDPORT on IBM-THINKPAD or other laptop.
The WORLDPORT option connects via parallel port to your laptop or PC. The external WORLDPORT module is approximately 1.5" x 7" x 10" and duplicates the functionality of the PRO RX/demodulator. The same antennas/connections can be used with the WORLDPORT as with the original AFMIT. The IBM THINKPAD+WORLDPORT package is much smaller than the AFMIT, and versions of the WeatherTrac-WIN32 software are available for the WORLDPORT under WIN95/98 or Windows-NT. We will credit $1000 toward the purchase of a new WeatherTrac-WIN32+WORLDPORT based system from us with the return for exchange of the original USAF AFMIT unit, functioning or not.
